I personally can’t imagine what it is like to grow up with that expectation and all the other feelings that come along with not being “successful” in the required time period.

What does that mean? Anju was okay as a character, but her motivations and development made little sense. A great all-around read!

She’s allowed her mother to drag her to every swami, fortune teller, and holy man she can find. Despite being a disappointment, Anju is not unloved and does not want to alienate her family by cutting all ties with her heritage and her customs.

For her debut effort, Kavita Daswani has done a commendable job. The book makes clear the importance of marriage and getting married at a young age, a basic fact of life for most Indians, whether boys or girls. Though, I wasn’t expecting the ending, it didn’t ring true to me no matter how anguished the mother was about her son. It is fast paced, light, and entertaining. I didn’t hate it. Kavita Daswani has a taken a simple story about an unmarried Indian girl and told it matrimonia mesmerizing intensity. Very quick, easy-read, but the main character, Anju, got on my last nerves.

The problem comes when the latter are represented as being part of the exotic Indian package. Tapi tuntutan keluarga membuatnya menjadi khawatir akan masa depannya kelak.

I really enjoyed how Anju decides to start her life anew and do something that many single Indian women wouldn’t do. It shouldn’t leave me as sad as this book did. There were some moments where I wanted to smack the heroine, but-objectively, at least- Daswani does not disappoint:
